'Fiji water girl' records herself on 2019 Golden Globes red carpet

Jamie Lee Curtis has criticised the “blatant promotions” she says two brands conducted on the Golden Globes red carpet – one of which involving the ambassador now known as the “Fiji water girl”.

The woman, a Canadian model named Kelleth Cuthbert, made headlines after posing in the background of many A-listers’ photos on Sunday night, wearing a Fiji-blue gown and holding a tray of Fiji water bottles.

She predictably went viral as social media users praised her ability to command attention even while posing behind some of the most in-demand celebrities of our time.

But some wondered whether this newfound viral fame was the result of a clever PR move rather than a fortuitous meme explosion.

Curtis echoed those concerns while slamming two brands – Fiji and Moët – in an Instagram post.

“I specifically moved away from the blatant promotions by Fiji and Moet where young women with their trays filled with their wares stood near a designated camera,” the actor wrote.

“I knew why there was a photographer poised there and I moved away as I said out loud that I didn’t want to be doing advertising for either."

Curtis posted a photo of herself with the Fiji ambassador in the background, adding: "Clearly this angle shows that I moved from her being behind me and yet from the side it still happens.

"The sponsors of events need to get permission from people when they get them to take their picture next to products."
