A Malaysian film crew and celebrity television host are in Canberra filming an episode of a popular travel program sponsored by Visit Canberra.

The program, Travel with Loved Ones, will air a 30 minute episode on Canberra to about 250,000 Malaysian viewers, encouraging them to visit the capital.

Host of Travel with Loved Ones Alvin Wong and his Aunt Cindy are spending a week in Canberra.

Their visit coincides with the first anniversary of Singapore Airlines international flights to Canberra.

Host Alvin Wong and his Aunt Cindy are spending a week in Canberra, discovering the exciting things including Cockington Green gardens, the kangaroos at Tidbinbilla with Canberra Guided Tours, Floriade and the cafe culture.

A Malaysian-based travel company is along for the ride, to create a "bookable Canberra itinerary for Malaysian consumers wanting to visit Australia's capital", a spokeswoman from Visit Canberra said.

Visit Canberra acting director Jonathan Kobus said Visit Canberra and Tourism Australia were sharing the costs for the production, with the Canberra tourism organisation putting up $8000 for the six-day shoot.

"A cooking course at Pialligo Estate and the hot air balloon ride on a stunning spring day proved popular," Mr Kobus said.

"The crew has been surprised by the variety of experiences on offer in Canberra."

Mr Kobus said many tourism industry members had provided discounted rates and their time to invest in the international media exposure.

"We've had many international travel shows visiting Canberra over a number of years. A Chinese travel show that filmed in Canberra last year, Yi Tiao, focused on Jamala Wildlife Lodge and resulted in a spike in Chinese visitors booking a trip to Canberra to stay at Jamala."

He said the end goal was to raise awareness of Canberra as a tourism destination "offering one good thing after another".

"Direct international flights from Singapore make flying to Canberra much easier for Malaysian visitors so it makes sense for us to invest in productions in key target markets to showcase our city."

"Visit Canberra works closely with Tourism Australia in key international target markets and was offered this broadcast opportunity to showcase Canberra to Malaysian viewers," Mr Kobus said.

The cast and crew of 10 people will be in Canberra until Monday. The show will be broadcast on NTV7 in Malaysia.
