An ex-serviceman who lost a leg in Afghanistan is walking more than 10 miles for a military charity that helped him back into work.

In 2009, Matt Fisher, from Chertsey, was deployed to the Afghan province of Helmand but was forced to return to Britain after he was shot in the ankle.

Even though doctors in the UK tried to save Mr Fisher's leg, they had no alternative but to amputate it a year later.

After six weeks of rehabilitation at Headley Court military hospital near Leatherhead, Mr Fisher had to come to terms with his new life outside the army.

His wife Maria, 32, told Get Surrey: "My husband lost his career in the army, so the most important thing was to get back into work because if you don't have a job it just messes up your family."

Walking with the Wounded (WWTW), a charity that supports veterans in their search for employment, helped Mr Fisher find a job as a carpenter.

Mrs Fisher, who is now a WWTW ambassador, said: "Matt was lucky because he is very proactive and even though there are times when he feels down, he is very focused and is surrounded by people who adore him."

She added: "But some people that Matt met along the way, who might have worse injuries than he does, don't have very supportive families and that's when things go wrong."

As a thank you for what the charity has done for him, Mr Fisher and his family are walking 11 miles from Windsor to Chertsey.

Through the walk, part of the charity's Christmas campaign, they hope to raise cash to help other servicemen who have been injured in conflict.

Open to everyone in the community, the walk is set to kick off from The King & Castle pub in Windsor at 11am on Sunday December 10.

It will finish at The Crown Hotel in London Street, Chertsey.

Encouraging people to take part in the challenge, Mrs Fisher said: "You are supporting someone who defended our country and unfortunately can't do that anymore."

"Matt would love to still be in the army and that's why we do so much with the charity. It helps him to still be involved," she added.

But this is not the first challenge Mr Fisher has participated in.

Two years ago, he went on a 100-mile long walking expedition which lasted for three months, from Scotland to Buckingham Palace

Mrs Fisher said: "When Matt was in Afghanistan there was an awful lot of death and a lot of them were his friends. The charity reignited him again."
