BRAZIL: Consumer Confidence Reaches Lowest Level Since October 2017

(Agencia CMA Latam) - Brazilian consumer confidence index fell 2.5 points in May from a month before, to 86.9 points - the lowest level since October 2017 - according to Fundallo Getulio Vargas. Data showed that consumers are satisfied with current economic conditions, but worried about the future.

"Consumer confidence fell for the second straight month and reached levels last seen in 2017. The lack of optimism is spreading to consumers from all income classes and cities and seems to be related to a worsening in the employment outlook in the next months," said Viviane Seda Bittencourt, who heads the consumer confidence survey in FGV.

The current situation index rose 0.9 in May compared to April, to 77.2 points, while the expectations index fell 4.8 points, to 94.2 points - the lowest level since September 2017.
