Retail giant Amazon has apologised to customers after a Black Friday blunder resulted in shoppers being sent toothbrushes, tambourines and condoms - instead of £300 Nintendo Switches.

At least a dozen disappointed buyers, some from the Midlands, have complained to the online seller over the warehouse error.

Amazon has now launched an investigation to find out how this could have happened.

They have promised to refund customers, some of whom are furious that they ordered during  Black Friday  but will now have to pay full price, MirrorOnline reports.

People thought they were purchasing Nintendo Switches

Viv Johnson from Tutbury, Staffordshire, received a copy of David Walliams's latest book, The Beast of Buckingham Palace, inside bashed-up cardboard packaging.

She wrote on social media: "I want my money refunded. You have delivered and refused to take back (the) parcel which was smashed.

"Inside was supposed to be a Nintendo Switch £279, instead there was a David Walliams book.

"I have been onto Amazon trying to get money refunded now and been told I have to wait 24 hours."

According to the Mirror, at least 12 buyers have complained to Amazon, which has now launched an investigation to find out how this could have happened.

Jake Lawrence, of Leicester, claimed he had been sent a tambourine and microphone instead of his Nintendo switch and he took to Twitter to complain.

He said: "What the hell! I ordered a switch and I've been sent a microphone and a tambourine!

"I'm happy to return but when am I getting my Switch? I've sent around £300 and haven't got the right order".

A spokesman for Amazon: "We're really sorry about that and are investigating exactly what's happened.
