Soon celebrating its third anniversary of operation on Sunday, Sept. 19, Little Dove Boutique creates festive, stainless-steel jewelry. Everything is made locally by owner Sara Racine, who is also known as Cornwall’s Little Historian.

(Full disclosure: Racine is married to Standard-Freeholder journalist Francis Racine, and writes the ongoing Freeholder ay 175 columns.)

Racine if hoping to sell all 40 pairs of poppies she has crafted, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to Cornwall’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297.

“My biggest goal is to sell out because I will have $800 to donate to the branch. I am really, really excited. It’s the most touching thing ever that people support what I do,” said Racine.

Racine wants to generate a greater awareness of our local Legion branch. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, several veteran-based organizations have suffered due to cancelled hall rentals.

“I noticed a lot of the people who are messaging me are people I haven’t talked to about jewelry before,” explained Racine, who announced this fundraiser on Sept. 3. “It has brought not only new people (to Little Dove Boutique), but a younger generation to the legion who are supporting this initiative.”

Throughout the process of making these earrings, Racine said she reflected on the sacrifices made by many brave Canadians. She purchased her first pair in honour of her great uncle, Pte. Ambrose Latour C/21739 from the Perth Regiment, R.C.I.C. Ambrose died on Jan. 17, 1944, at the Battle of the Arielli River.

“It is often said that jewelry can become conversation pieces. This is my hope for these poppy earrings: that they can be gentle reminders of such tragic events throughout our history, and an entire conversation, because we must never ever forget,” she added.

A pair of poppy earrings can be purchased for $20 in cash at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297 on Second Street West inn Cornwall. To co-ordinate a purchase or view a schedule of when Racine will be available at the branch, visit Little Dove Boutique on Facebook and send a private message. Racine said she is proud to have already sold half of her philanthropic accessories within four days of her first announcement on social media.
