COLUMBIA — A vintage boutique in Forest Acres is closing its doors, but you will still be able to find some of its products around town.

Throwback Outpost on North Beltline announced April 17 it will close at the end of May. Partners Alex Smith and Mason Doane posted on the store’s Instagram they will be leaving to pursue new ventures.

“We’re really sad that we’re going to be leaving Columbia, but at the same time we’re all really excited to start new ventures, and we really do appreciate all of y’all for your continued support of the store,” Smith said in the Instagram video.

A Peddler’s Emporium, the store’s women’s clothing arm, will remain active through appearances at Soda City and other market appearances after the brick-and-mortar store closes, store partner Nicolette Bryan said.

Throwback Outpost originally opened in 2019 as a partnership between several artists who had been selling at various markets and temporary locations, offering vintage clothing, vinyl records and art from and inspired by the 1970s.

Smith said the store will be posting sales to clear out inventory ahead of its last day at the end of May. The store is open from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Columbia’s downtown office market improving

The capital city’s downtown office market is continuing to grow and is shifting where it's concentrated, according to a report from the Columbia office of commercial real-estate group Colliers International Group Inc.

Columbia has over 236,000 square feet of office space expected to hit the market in 2024, according to the report. This is the most new office space coming to any city in the state.

Major players moving into the new square footage include government agencies such as the state departments of Education and Natural Resources and residential developer Mungo Homes.

Vacancy and construction metrics have improved in the city from this time last year, according to the report. Interest remains high in the Columbia suburbs, but is growing in the central business district.

Vicious Biscuit announces opening date

Upscale breakfast chain Vicious Biscuit announced it will hold its grand opening at its first Columbia location on May 4. The local location shared the scheduled opening date in an April 10 Facebook post.

The new breakfast spot will be located at 3246 Forest Drive, near the under-destruction Richland Mall. The menu will include various biscuits and other breakfast items, as well as cocktails.

The chain has eight locations nationwide, with two previous Palmetto State stores in Mount Pleasant and Summerville, several in North Carolina and Florida and an upcoming location in Ohio, according to the chain’s website.

The Sandhills location of Cracker Barrel Country Store has closed permanently, according to a recorded voicemail reached when calling the store’s local number.

“Thank you for calling the Sandhill Cracker Barrel; this location has permanently closed,” the restaurant’s phone message says “We invite you to visit one of our more than 160 locations in 44 states.”

The message does not provide any comment on why the store has closed.

The now-closed location was located at 253 Forum Drive. The Sandhills location is survived by locations in Irmo and two in Columbia.

A historic Vista building has been leased to a Columbia-based group for office space.

University Industry Demonstration Partnership, Inc., a Columbia-based group connecting university research programs with industry partners, is moving from its current Richland Street office to the Vista, according to a release from commercial realtor Trinity Partners.

The group will move into 701 Gervais Street, a building originally built in the early 20th Century and redeveloped into mixed-use apartments and commercial space in 2003, according to Historic Columbia.

The building is included in The Vista neighborhood’s National Register of Historic Places designation.

A new spa is coming to Main Street.

Spa Obsessed will be located on 1332 Main Street, Suite #112 and will have its grand opening on April 26 at 11:00 a.m.

The spa will offer manicures, pedicures, gel nail extensions, dip powder, and paraffin waxing.

Methodical Coffee, a Greenville-based cafe, will open a store in Columbia's BullStreet District.

The expansion is the first outside of Greenville for the coffee company, which has three locations in the burgeoning Upstate city.
