To commemorate World Press Freedom Day today, the University of Fiji gifted a scholarship to a deserving Bachelor of Journalism and Media student of the University.

The scholarship was a gift in the name of the late Suresh Chandra Balgovind by his widow Mrs Balgovind and her family.

While speaking from Melbourne, their daughter Praneela Prasad told UniFiji Vice Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem that her father wanted to make a significant contribution towards education in Fiji.

She says her grandfather who was a successful businessman in Fiji was an avid reader of newspapers, kept up with the news media and instilled the same interest in his children therefore Balgovind was keen to carry on the tradition of education for the next generation.

While expressing her appreciation to the family, Professor Shameem says this will allow UniFiji’s top journalism student to continue their education and media training at the university without having to worry about the cost of the education.
