Holiday Travel: What to expect during Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and New Year's Day

Colder air and windy conditions in the Carolinas to start the New Year

RIGHT? TRUE. WE HAVE A GOOD TIME. THAT’S CRAZY TO THINK ABOUT. YEAH, WE’RE INTO 2025 NOW. JUST WAITING ON THAT FIRST SUNRISE OF THE YEAR. HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY. OF COURSE. LOOKING BEAUTIFUL. NO SIGN OF LIGHT JUST YET. THE SUNRISE WILL BE AT 731 THIS MORNING. AND THEN LATER ON THIS EVENING, SUNSET ON JANUARY 1ST WILL BE AT 5:17 P.M. HOW ABOUT THAT? PRETTY CHILLY START TO THE MORNING HERE. A JANUARY 1ST, LOW TO MID 40S ACROSS THE PIEDMONT. WE’VE GOT SOME LOW 40S IN THE FOOTHILLS AND ALSO SOME 30S UP IN THE MOUNTAINS, SO WE’RE ALL DRY AND SKIES ARE MAINLY CLEAR OFF IN THE MOUNTAINS. THERE ARE A FEW LIGHT SNOW SHOWERS FOR PLACES LIKE BOONE AND JEFFERSON, ESPECIALLY SOME OF THOSE HIGHER ELEVATIONS. BUT THE BIGGEST STORY UP IN THE MOUNTAINS IS THE WIND. YOU’VE PROBABLY HEARD IT WHIPPING OUTSIDE THROUGH THE TREES AND ON YOUR ROOF. THEY’VE HAD SOME 40 AND EVEN 50 MILE PER HOUR GUSTS UP THERE IN THE MOUNTAINS. IT’S STILL BREEZY DOWN HERE IN THE TRIAD, MAYBE SOME 10 TO 20 MILE PER HOUR GUSTS THIS MORNING. BUT THE MOUNTAINS, BY FAR THE WINDIEST PART OF OUR AREA. RIGHTFULLY SO. THEY HAVE A WIND ADVISORY UNTIL NOON TODAY THAT INCLUDES SURRY, WILKES, ALLEGHANY, ASHE AND WATAUGA COUNTIES. SOME 30, 40, EVEN 50 MILE PER HOUR WIND GUSTS POSSIBLE THIS MORNING AS THOSE SNOW SHOWERS WIND DOWN, THAT COULD CAUSE A FEW POWER OUTAGES. MAYBE BRING A FEW TREE BRANCHES DOWN AS WELL. SO BE AWARE OF THAT. FOR THE MOUNTAINS AND FOOTHILLS, WE’LL HAVE THE IMPACT. IMPACT ICONS UP THROUGH NOON TODAY, BUT IT WILL STAY PRETTY BREEZY THROUGH THE REST OF THE AFTERNOON. TWO VERY COLD HIGH TEMPERATURES ONLY IN THE UPPER 30S. AND WHEN YOU FACTOR IN THAT WIND, IT’S REALLY GOING TO BE FEELING MORE LIKE THE UPPER 20S AND LOW 30S. LATER THIS AFTERNOON. AGAIN, THAT WIND ADISORY FOR WILKES AND SURRY THIS MORNING THROUGH NOON, WE’RE AT A HIGH OF 50 IN THE FOOTHILLS THIS AFTERNOON. VERY SEASONABLE HERE IN THE TRIAD. PLENTY OF SUNSHINE TODAY. IT WILL BE BREEZY AND COOL, BUT HIGHS IN THE LOW 50S RIGHT AROUND AVERAGE FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. PLENTY OF SUN TODAY FOR OUR FIRST DAY OF JANUARY. TOMORROW. ON OUR SECOND DAY. WE’LL HAVE PLENTY OF SUNSHINE AS WELL. SO A REALLY NICE PAIR OF DAYS COMING UP. BUT BY FRIDAY MORNING WE’LL SEE SOME CLOUDS INCREASE ACROSS THE AREA AHEAD OF OUR NEXT COLD FRONT. THERE COULD BE AN ISOLATED SHOWER FRIDAY AFTERNOON, BUT AS THAT COLD FRONT MOVES THROUGH, THE BIGGER STORY WILL BE THAT COLD ARCTIC AIR THAT IT BRINGS BEHIND US. SO OUR TEMPERATURES TREND A BIT COOLER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. HIGHS IN THE UPPER 40S THURSDAY AND FRIDAY, BUT THEN SATURDAY INTO THE WEEKEND AND EARLY NEXT WEEK, WE’VE GOT A VERY COLD STRETCH OF WEATHER ON THE WAY, WITH HIGHS ONLY IN THE UPPER 30S AND LOW 40S FOR SEVERAL DAYS, AND IT’S AROUND THAT TIME FRAME WHEN WE’RE GOING TO BE PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE WEATHER PATTERN. WITH COLD AIR IN PLACE, LOOKS LIKE A SYSTEM MAY DEVELOP OFF TO THE WEST AND BRING A WET OR EVEN POTENTIALLY WINTRY SCENARIO TO THE CAROLINAS SUNDAY NIGHT AND INTO MONDAY OF EARLY NEXT WEEK. JUST RAIN IN THE FORECAST FOR NOW, BUT WE’RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO KEEP YOU POSTED AS WE GO THROUGH TIME. PLEN
