Josh KellyFish fry Fridays are a staple for many during the Lenten season, when people begin to abstain from eating land animal meats like beef, pork, poultry and sheep.
This six-week diet change will leave many families without meat or switching to a pescatarian diet, with only fish meals in place.
Eating fish has become so synonymous with Lenten season that many big-name chains add a fish alternative to menus, and churches begin hosting Fish Fry Fridays to give their members a chance to commune and grab a protein-rich meal.
Here’s a small pond of places with some of the best spots to grab fish in Oklahoma City during Lent.
Crabtown
With fish, crab, lobster, oysters and a shrimp boil, there isn’t much that Crabtown doesn’t have. The Bricktown location spans 20,000 square feet, serving up Cajun-inspired dishes. The restaurant boasts that silverware is not required because they want you to enjoy the food in every aspect.
The restaurant at 303 E Sheridan Ave. is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Hefner Grill
Temperatures are picking up, and the wind is still blowing, meaning eating some seafood on the shores of Lake Hefner may take you to the beach — at least mentally. Hefner Grill's entire menu is filled with different options for those looking for seafood. New to the menu is salt and pepper shrimp to start you off or a plate of pecan-crusted trout.
The restaurant at 9201 Lake Hefner Pkwy is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Cajun Corner
Still lingering on the feelings from Mardi Gras that caused you to wake up on Ash Wednesday? Cajun Corner, a family-owned Cajun-fusion restaurant, has three locations throughout Oklahoma City. You may be tempted to enjoy their chicken products, but looking past that, you’ll find blackened fish fillet, shrimp, salmon and seafood in their signature baskets.
The three locations are on Northwest Expressway, Uptown 23 Street, and just east of the airport. Check your local store for hours.
El Sabor De La Baja OKC
No beef, pork or poultry often means no tacos. However, El Sabor De La Baja goes beyond tacos and includes several seafood-based dishes. The restaurant’s shrimp ceviche tostado and the mojarra frita allow guests to enjoy fried fish cooked by the local chefs.
The store at 2815 NW 10 is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Chain businesses add fish to menus
Many fast-food business chains offer fish meals, such as Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburger Deluxe Crispy Fish Sandwich or the Popeyes Shrimp Tacklebox and Flounder Fish Sandwich.
