Credentials
Carney was at the helm of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. After helping Canada deal with the worst impacts of the 2008 financial crisis, he was recruited to become the first non-Briton to take the reins of the Bank of England since its founding in 1694.
In 2020, he began serving as the United Nations Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance.
At one point, Carney was an executive at Goldman Sachs. He worked for 13 years in London, Tokyo, New York, and Toronto before being appointed as the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada in 2003. He has no political experience.
Education
Carney earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard University in 1988, and a master’s and a doctorate in economics from the University of Oxford. Like many Canadians, he played ice hockey, serving as a backup goalie on the Harvard team.
Citizenship
Carney has Canadian, British, and Irish citizenship. He has taken steps to maintain only his Canadian citizenship, which is not a legal requirement but is considered politically prudent.
Family
His wife Diana is British and has four daughters.
Surveys
His chances of remaining as prime minister for more than a few weeks seem to be increasing. In a survey conducted in mid-January by Nanos, the Liberals were behind the Conservatives and their leader Pierre Poilievre, 47% to 20%. The most recent polls this week indicate that the Liberals have a preference of 34% compared to the Conservatives' 37%.
