Gremlins JV earns a pair of wins at Spring Swing

MARQUETTE — The Houghton Gremlins JV softball team earned two wins and finished 2-1-1 at the Spring Swing this past weekend at the Superior Dome in Marquette.

Houghton opened with a 2-2 tie against the Escanaba JV team, before falling 12-6 to Jeffers. They followed that effort up with a 9-1 win against Gwinn and a 13-7 win over the Westwood JV team.

Against Escanaba, Ellie Hainault went the distance in the pitcher’s circle, giving up six hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings.

Houghton struck first in the bottom of the first. Hainault tripled to right field to lead off. Two batters later, she scored on a single by Karly Mattsen.

Escanaba tied things up in the top of the second, and the game remained 1-1 until the bottom of the fourth.

Josie Switzer led off with a double. Madalyn Larson then sacrificed to move her to third. Sophie Hebert then popped out to short, but Switzer was able to score on a defensive error.

Escanaba got the run back in the top of the sixth to cap the scoring in the game.

In the second game of the weekend, Switzer pitched all four innings in the loss to the Jets. She gave up 10 hits and five walks, but struck out nine.

Janet Mattila went the distance for the Jets, giving up six hits and three walks. She struck out six as well.

Aya Keteri got the Jets started in the top of the first as she drew a lead off walk. Two batters later, Meg Ruohonen singled, and Keteri scored.

In the bottom half of the inning, Kia Markham doubled to lead off for Houghton. Two batters later, Mattson walked. Switzer then doubled, knocking in both runners. Thora Bier then brought Switzer home with a double. Two batters later, Hebert singled, and Bier scored on an error.

Houghton extended their lead in the second.

Markham singled, and then scored on a single by Jillian Isaacson.

The Jets then found their offense in the third inning.

Chloe Snell walked to lead off. Keteri laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Snell to second. Gracie Moyle then grounded out, moving Snell to third. Ruohonen singled to knock Snell home. Naomi Frahm drew a walk, and a double by Mattila brough Ruohonen home. Kylee Andrews was hit by a pitch, but Frahm scored before Andrews was hit. Another walk set up Kaydee Archambeau, who singled to knock in two runs after Mattila scored on a wild pitch and suddenly the Jets led 7-5.

Bier got the Gremlins back on the board in the bottom of the third when she was hit by a pitch and later scored an error after Larson singled.

The Jets responded in the top of the fourth as Keteri singled and two batters later, Ruohonen knocked her home with a single of her own. After Frahm walked, Mattla singled. Ruohonen scored on the play. Andrews then doubled, knocking in both Frahm and Mattila. Two batters later, Archambeau singled. Andrews scored during the at bat on a wild pitch.

After the Gremlins defeated Gwinn in a game where they scored seven runs in the second inning and got five innings in the pitcher’s circle from Reagan Moyle, they battled hard for a win over the Patriots in a game where they opened with three run, scored three more in the fourth, and six in the fifth to earn the win.

Romi Mattson went five innings in the pitcher’s circle, giving up seven hits and two walks, but striking out 13.

Mattson singled to lead off. Isaacson grounded out next, but Mattson scored on the play. Mattsen then homered to center to make it 2-0 Houghton. Switzer tripled and then scored on a Bier single.

The game was 3-1 in favor of the Gremlins in the top of the third when Isaacson led off with a triple. She scored on a passed ball with Mattsen at the plate.

Houghton led 4-1 in the fourth, when their two-out started with a double by Mattson. Jillian Isaacson singled to score Mattson. Mattsen doubled to center, and Switzer singled, knocking in two.

Westwood got one back in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-2 Houghton, before their big inning broke the game wide open.

Skye Isaacson started with a ground ball. She reached on an error. Sonya Swetich followed with a single, scoring Isaacson. Three batters later, Jillian Isaacson singled, scoring Swetich. Mattsen then reached on an error, which scored Mattson. Switzer singled, scoring Jillian Isaacson and Mattsen. Switzer then scored three batters later by stealing home to make it 13-2 Gremlins at that point.

Westwood scored five times in the bottom of the fifth before Houghton could get the final out to end the game.
