UK households who have LPG supply have been warned over the new Ofgem price cap. Writing into the Guardian newspaper, a UK households - known only as PG, from Powys in Wales - issued a stark warning over the April 1 hike.

The letter writes: "I read that the energy price cap is going up again in April and people are struggling to pay their bills, but I can’t find any information relating to homes with bulk LPG tanks.

"Does anybody care about us? Is there any control over the spiralling cost of buying it? At the moment we pay 63p a litre plus VAT, but our two-year deal ends in September. Our previous contract was at 40p a litre, so we have already experienced a big jump in our household energy costs.

"We live in a small two-bedroom house and currently spend about £50 a month on electricity and just over £100 on gas. We rarely have the thermostat above 16C, and that’s only in the evenings.

"Yesterday I found out that the current rate for LPG is 98p a litre. I’m worried it will be even higher by the time my contract runs out. I live in rural Mid Wales, so mains gas is never going to be an option."

The price cap only applies to mains electricity and gas, to consumers (not businesses). It's never covered any other sort of fuel. Money Helper explained: "Many people are worried about the rising cost of household energy, but if your home isn’t connected to mains gas your heating bills are likely to be growing faster than average.

"There are four million UK households relying on fuel sources like liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), heating oil or solid fuel like wood or coal.

"Unlike mains gas and electricity, there’s no Energy Price Guarantee to help control the cost of these types of fuel. There aren’t many options to help you save money on energy at the moment, but this guide shows you a few ways you can limit the impact of price rises."

After being approached by the Guardian, the Welsh government championed its Nest service, which provides support, including links to grants and loans.
