A popular imported shampoo brand has recalled hundreds of bottles after it was discovered they may contain a bacteria that can cause serious infections. Henkel has recalled 1,068 units of its Tec Italy branded shampoo conditioner for dry and damaged hair that were distributed in the US. The product is available online in the UK.

The shampoo tested positive for contamination by the Klebsiella oxytoca bacteria, a healthy bacteria normally found in the gut. However, exposure outside of the intensities can cause eye, nose, and skin infections. People with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of adverse infections.

The company said that no health problems have been reported so far. “Consumers who experience symptoms, or have any medical questions associated with this recall, should consult a physician immediately,” Henkel said.

The recall has been classified as Class II by the the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), meaning "a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."

The Tec Italy brand is sold by major retailers, including Walmart, Target and Amazon. This issue comes just a few months after Tec Italy's Tonico Shampoo was recalled in January due to potential contamination with E coli bacteria.
