  • Every day, the Hindir-Lane family hosts a fashion show where the kids show off their outfits
  • Chancè Hindir-Lane shares with PEOPLE exclusively that this has grown her sons’ confidence
  • Now, her boys go around and compliment other boys, feeling confident in their skin

Building confidence at an early age is essential. Every day, the Hindir-Lane family hosts fashion shows with their kids after they pick out their outfits. The family hypes them up with compliments, reaffirming their fashion choices for the week. This is a practice the family has adopted to build confidence in their sons from an early age.

Chancè Hindir-Lane talks with PEOPLE exclusively about how these fashion shows became a part of their daily routine, originating from a conversation she had with her husband.

"My husband said as a Black man, I've noticed that we are not as comfortable or confident expressing those compliments to each other, and that is driven from a heavy history of Black boys being told to suppress their emotions, being told that certain behaviors aren't manly, or berated for being emotionally expressive," Hindir-Lane recalls. "My husband said, 'I would love to see a generation of boys who are more confident in themselves and more comfortable expressing these feelings in this way and out loud.' It gave me something to think about."

When Hindir-Lane's oldest son was four, he expressed independence and wanted to begin picking out his own outfits. Hindir-Lane and her husband ensure the clothes for the week are weather-appropriate, but their kids get to make their daily choices from that selection.

"Every time he picks his outfit, he'll walk in and show me his outfit. We'll have huge responses because kids gravitate toward your emotions and your voice,” recalls Hindir-Lane. “We want them to be comfortable showing the same to other kids, and we want to build their confidence in having the option to wear what they want, giving them the option to pick their outfits — that freedom of saying I have control over how I look."

One thing that is key to the success of these fashion shows and building confidence is allowing the boys to make their own decisions and feel like they have control over their choices.

“Confidence is one of those things where we all tend to think it comes from external validation, but it comes from internal validation. We have been entrusted with raising little humans,” Hindir-Lane tells PEOPLE. “We let these kids take care of themselves, and that builds confidence within themselves. It is up to us to let them try things and fail."

"My mom used to say that what she says to me externally is going to become my inner thoughts. I carry that with me," she continues. "Externally, we want to always speak positively to them, and that's also a great way to build their confidence because I want their inner thoughts to be that."

Hindir-Lane shares that these fashion shows have been instrumental in the growth of her son's confidence, and she notices her sons also began to compliment other boys they know.

"The biggest response has been seeing the boys' confidence grow, and more importantly, it's been seeing them replicate that to other kids. We often get told by their teachers, 'Oh, he is the kindest boy. He compliments everyone.' I recently took him to a mommy and me school dance. One thing I saw, more importantly than anything, was how he walked around complimenting other boys."

"It's our job to make sure that we're raising a better generation, one that is more accepting, more comfortable in their own skin, and most importantly, I want them to be joyful. I think Black boy joy is important. I think men deserve to be loved on, and they deserve to be complimented. I want that for our boys when they grow up," Hindir-Lane shares.

"Kids are very underserved in our community, and I want them to be viewed as little humans who are eventually just going to grow up to take over the world," she continues. "How incredible will it be if all of them are walking around confident in their skin and are able to express themselves how they wish to?"
