High street store closures including WHSmith and Poundland – is your local closing?

It is feared more than 17,000 stores will shut this year as brands face higher costs from this April going forward, after 13,479 retail stores closed in the UK in 2024

Well-known highstreet brands including WHSmith, Poundland and Sports Direct are set to shut several stores over the next few weeks.

WHSmith has been slowly closing shops over the recent months, but this week it was announced the stationery retailer agreed to sell its 480 UK high street stores to investment firm Modella Capital. The deal valued £76million, with shops set to eventually rebrand as TGJones, meaning the famous WHSmith name will disappear after 233 years from town centres.

In 2024, a staggering 13,479 retail stores shut their doors in the UK, marking a 28% increase from 2023, as per The Centre for Retail Research. This equates to roughly 37 stores closing daily.

With retailers bracing for higher costs from this April due to increased employer National Insurance contributions and a rise in minimum wage, over 17,000 stores are predicted to close this year.

Our map reveals that more than 200 shops and banks have already ceased operations in 2025, including high-street favourites like New Look, Select Fashion, Monki and Quiz Clothing. Over 60 bank branches have also closed their doors in 2025, with Lloyds, Halifax, Barclays and Bank of Scotland among them.
