Man impersonating officer forced woman in car, forcibly sexually assaulted her, DA says
DNA evidence from a rape kit helped send a North Carolina man to prison for attempted rape, according to the Buncombe County District Attorney's Office.
Dwight Eugene Morgan Jr. pleaded guilty Monday to committing the offense of attempted second-degree rape as a result of an incident that occurred in July of 2014.
As a result of the plea Superior Court Judge Alan Thornburg sentenced Morgan to serve 132 to 219 months in the custody of North Carolina State prisons.
The case went unsolved until April 2019 when, as a result of a Combined DNA Index System (“CODIS”) hit of DNA evidence recovered from a sexual assault kit, Morgan was identified as a suspect.
At the time of the offense, the victim reported that she was working in the area of South French Broad Avenue when Morgan approached her, impersonated a police officer, and ordered her into his vehicle. Morgan threatened to take her to jail if she did not comply with his demands for sex, investigators said. They said he then forced her into the front seat of his vehicle, drove to another location, and forcibly sexually assaulted her.
The State prosecuted the case by adding the aggravating factor that Morgan took advantage of a position of trust or confidence by pretending to be a police officer during the commission of the assault.
In addition to the prison sentence, Thornburg ordered Morgan to register as a sex offender and to have no contact with the victim for the remainder of his life.
The victim was advised of the plea and approved of the sentence.
The District Attorney's Office commends the victim for her courage in coming forward and cooperating with the investigation.
