Puppets and humans unite in Pandora Productions' 'Avenue Q' at Henry Clay Theatre
This Friday night will be the final opening night of the monster-themed season from Pandora Productions.
The show is the Tony Award-winning puppet and human mashup "Avenue Q."
David Gallaway plays the character Trekkie Monster in this production. For him, this is a show that modern audiences can relate to.
"This play deals with lots of current issues," Gallaway said. "It addresses how we treat each other, [and how we should] treat people like people, not like they're different. It's very important."
The show features real actors interacting with puppets in a world where the two live side by side. Gil Reyes, the director of "Avenue Q" and the producing artistic director of Pandora Productions, believes most people will recognize the structure.
"'Avenue Q' is like 'Sesame Street' for adults," Reyes said with a laugh. "It has grown-up messages — things you might learn in college or during your first few years out of college."
It goes without saying that the cast and crew of "Avenue Q" hope audience members have a good time. But according to Gallaway, he hopes you leave the theater at the Henry Clay a little wiser than when you walked in.
"I want people to have fun but also to think," Gallaway said. "To think about others; think about how other people are influenced by everything we do."
The show opens on April 4 and runs on Thursday-Sunday, except for on April 12 and 20. See the full list of dates.
Due to some coarse language, the show is not recommended for those under 12.
