Two notable newcomers have joined the non-fiction bestsellers this week, both by Canadians:
First, at No. 5, is “When the Going Was Good: An Editor’s Adventures During the Last Golden Age of Magazines,” by Toronto-born, New York-ensconced Graydon Carter, about the halcyon days when expense accounts were as creative as the glossy content of Carter’s Vanity Fair.
At No. 8 is “Ripper; The Making of Pierre Poilievre,” by Toronto writer Mark Bourrie. The title derives from a coinage by New York Times columnist David Brooks, who has identified two types of politicians, the rippers (disrupters who aim to shred the body politic) and the weavers (who want to repair society’s social ills).
On the Canadian list, Mark Carney’s “Value(s): Building a Better World for All,” his 2021 call for choosing human values over market values, is comfortably sitting at No. 1 while Graydon’s memoir joins the list at No. 2, with Bourrie’s analysis of the Conservative populist at No. 4.
