In June of 1975, Jaws was first released in theaters. Now, 50 years after its original release, Jaws is set to re-release in theaters in August of this year.
Like most films, Jaws is based on a novel. In 1974, the Jaws novel was released, written by Peter Benchley and published by Doubleday. The plot centers around a great white shark that terrorizes a Long Island resort town and it inhabitants, and follows the three men who try and kill it. 50 years on, the book and film have become pop culture icons, spawning quotes like, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
Empire Magazine paid homage to the 50th anniversary with the release of new Jaws-themed covers. IMAX will be showing the film in traditional and 3D formats. Megan Colligan, president of IMAX Entertainment has stated that, “IMAX is thrilled to partner with Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment to offer audiences the opportunity to experience these two iconic films in IMAX for the very first time. Steven Spielberg redefined modern cinema and ushered in a new era of bold, swing-for-the-fences filmmaking, and the IMAX Experience has expanded around the world because of the trail blazed by films like E.T. and Jaws.”
Universal Pictures will be offering a 50th anniversary dvd and blu-ray release of the film. NECA will be releasing Jaws-themed figures. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will be featuring a Jaws-themed exhibit called Jaws: The Exhibition.
