A 258-ton power component for the Microsoft datacenter in Malaga sits in the Wenatchee Appleyard rail depot before final delivery.

CHELAN COUNTY — A major piece of Microsoft’s new datacenter development in Malaga rolled into place today.

Traffic on Malaga-Alcoa Highway was briefly delayed just after noon while a power component for the datacenter was trucked south about seven miles. The component, manufactured by the Brazilian company WEG Industries, had arrived earlier by train at the Appleyard rail depot in south Wenatchee.

Chelan County’s Public Works department says the slow progress was necessary, because the component itself weighs about 516,000 pounds, or 258 tons.

Construction at the datacenter began in 2023. It’s expected to finish up sometime next year.
