Alappuzha: In a significant move to boost safety and operational efficiency, the Railways has shifted to Electronic Interlocking System at more stations across Kerala. The advanced system is designed to eliminate delays and signal failures.
The system is being installed at 60 stations under the Thiruvananthapuram Division, with work already completed at 32 of them.

The new system replaces the older panel interlocking mechanism, where station masters manually controlled train movements via a signal board inside their cabins. In contrast, the Electronic Interlocking system is computer-based and significantly reduces the chances of human error or external interference.
Officials say the system allows for instant signal adjustments during emergencies, making it possible to secure tracks within seconds. It also ensures better adherence to train schedules by minimising delays caused by signal malfunctions.
The prominent stations that have already switched to the upgraded system include Thiruvananthapuram Central and North, Kollam Junction, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam Junction and Town, Thrissur, Cherthala, and Haripad.
The Thiruvananthapuram Division spans from Tirunelveli to Vallathol Nagar and includes 103 stations. The railway authorities expect the complete transition to not only boost operational efficiency but also significantly improve passenger safety across the network.
