MONMOUTH, Ore. — Former Port Angeles track and cross-country teammates Jack Gladfelter and Max Baeder met again in an Oregon college meet, with Gladfelter putting in a third-place finish at the John Knight Invitational at Western Oregon University this weekend.

Gladfelter, competing for Corban University in Salem, Ore., competed in the first heat of the 5,000-meter men’s race Friday night and finished third with a season-best time of 14 minutes, 44.11 seconds, which was only 3 seconds out of first place. That time placed him as the 12th-fastest 5K runner in the nation among National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics colleges and universities.

Baeder, now running for The Evergreen State College, competed in the second heat and came in 16th with a personal-best time of 15:17.97, a 35-second improvement over his previous personal best.

While competing for Port Angeles, Gladfelter finished third at the state cross-country championships in 2022, while Baeder was 17th. Gladfelter also finished fifth at the state track and field meet in 2022 in both the 1,600 meters and the 3,200 meters.

Both athletes will compete Saturday. Baeder will be at the Puget Sound Invitational in Tacoma, while Gladfelter will compete at Lewis-Clark University in Portland, Ore.

Sequim kids fishing day

SEQUIM — The 24th annual Kids’ Fishing Day is scheduled from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at the Water Re-use Demonstration Pond on the north side of Carrie Blake Park at 202 N. Blake Ave. in Sequim.

All kids 14 and younger are invited to participate, accompanied by an adult. No fishing license is required. Kids are allowed to keep two fish each.

Worms and power bait will be available, and a fish cleaning station will be provided. The event is sponsored by the North Olympic Peninsula Chapter of Puget Sound Anglers, the City of Sequim and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
