After a week of glorious sunshine, grey skies are once again on the horizon for Merseyside as a heavy downpour is predicted to sweep across the North West.

A yellow weather warning has been put in place as the Met Office warns of "heavy and persistent rain" and possible flooding.

A spell of heavy and persistent rain is expected to move north across western Britain throughout today, April 15, at 12pm until 12pm on Wednesday, April 16, the Met Office said.

While there is some uncertainty in where the heaviest rain will fall, 20-40mm of rain is expected. A few places may see 50-75 mm of rain during this period: gradually building up in the west following rain yesterday (Monday, April 14).

In parts of the east, the rain is expected to fall in shorter periods, with heavy showers and thunderstorms being more slow-moving across the area.

Affected areas include Merseyside, Cheshire West and Chester, and Halton. Wales is also expected to bear the brunt of the deluge, with 22 local authorities being given weather warnings.

Weather forecasters have warned that "heavy rain may result in some transport disruption and flooding in places on Tuesday and Wednesday."

People have been warned to check if their property could be at risk of flooding, and consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.

People may also want to prepare for power cuts, with torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items, the Met Office said.

Drivers are encouraged to give themselves the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending travel plans if necessary.
