This fact-based hijack drama stars Tom Hanks as a cargo ship captain who faces off against Somali pirates - led by then acting newcomer Barkhad Abdi - off the Horn of Africa. Directed by Paul Greengrass (United 93), this is not a simple case of heroes and villains; it plays out politically on the world stage. As tense and gripping as it gets, the film received a raft of Oscar nominations, but came away, like the pirates, empty-handed.
Among the pirate cast, Barkhad Abdi is especially impressive as the captain of the Somali vessel. Abdi was a Somali immigrant working in a mobile phone shop in the US when he was cast in the movie, a role for which he won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor. He's had a steady acting career since.
