Police in Thessaloniki smash adulterated olive oil ring

Authorities in Thessaloniki have dismantled a criminal ring that sold adulterated oil falsely labeled as “extra virgin olive oil.”
Five members of the group were arrested, and they now face multiple felony charges including counterfeiting, fraud and organized criminal activity.
In a coordinated police raid in the Menemeni district, officers uncovered an illegal manufacturing facility along with storage spaces used by the gang. More than 15 tons of adulterated oil – stored in 15-liter containers – were confiscated.
According to investigators, the oil had been mixed with sunflower oil and chemical dyes to mimic the color and texture of authentic extra virgin olive oil.
To make their product appear legitimate, the gang also used falsified certificates attesting to the oil’s supposed quality and origin.
Among those in custody is a 55-year-old man believed to be the ringleader. He had previously been arrested in Alexandria, Imathia, in February for similar offenses, but was released after being charged with misdemeanors.
Also arrested was the alleged leader’s 51-year-old wife. Their 33-year-old son is wanted in connection with the case.
The suspects were led brought an investigating magistrate.
