BYU Roundup: BYU Cheer nabs hardware at national event

The BYU Cheer Squad took home a first place and a fourth place trophy at the national championships in Florida.

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida — The BYU Cheer Squad finished first and fourth in the game day and coed divisions at the 2025 National Collegiate Cheer & Dance Championship.

The NCA Championships were held April 9-13 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

BYU competed in the 1A Game Day Division at the championships, finishing the finals with the top-place score of 92.1083, beating the 2024 national champions Michigan, who scored 90.4625. In the 1A Advanced Small Coed Division, the team finished the finals with a score of 92.5667, behind Texas Tech, UNC and Kennesaw State for a fourth-place finish.

BYU MEN’S GOLF

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – BYU shot 7-over (357) in the opening 18 holes of the 78th Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club on Monday.

Peter Kim leads the Cougars after day one with his even par 70. After carding three bogeys in his front nine, Kim was able to answer with four in his back nine, three of which were consecutive on his last holes. The sophomore is tied for 20th.

No. 18 San Diego State claims the top spot at 12-under, with No. 21 Arizona, Stanford and Nihon seven strokes behind to be tied for second. UNLV rounded out the top five with its 4-under par.

Senior Cole Ponich shot a 1-over 71, highlighted by three birdies on his front nine. Ponich sits tied for 34th. Zac Jones is tied for 43rd with his 2-over 72. Jones made an eagle on the par 5 hole nine.

Simon Kwon and Tyson Shelley are tied with Jones at 43rd. Kwon made two birdies in a row on holes eight and nine.

Like his teammate, Kevin Wu made an eagle on hole nine. Wu shot 5-over to be tied for 73rd.

BYU teed off in round two on Tuesday at 11 a.m. MST. Follow live scoring on Scoreboard or watch the broadcast on Golf Channel at 5 p.m. MST.

BYU WOMEN’S GOLF

PARIS, Ken. — The Cougars are teeing off in the Big 12 Championship from Apr. 15-17 at Houston Oaks Golf Course.

The starting lineup includes seniors Adeline (Anderson) Wach and Alexa Udom, junior Lily McCauley, sophomore Maria Jose “MJ” Barragan and freshman Kanyanol (Naji) Aramkul. Junior Sunbin Seo will be present as a substitute.

BYU will be entering a 14-team field, which includes No. 19 Arizona, No. 8 Arizona State, No. 15 TCU, UCF, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Cincinnati, Colorado, Houston, No. 22 Kansas, K-State, Baylor and Texas Tech.

The 54-hole stroke play tournament will begin Tuesday morning and conclude Thursday afternoon. BYU tees off at 9:30 a.m. MST. The tournament will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and live scoring will be on Scoreboard.
