28 Years Later star confirms movie was filmed with iPhone

While the internet has been speculating about whether or not Cillian Murphy is in the upcoming movie 28 Years Later, one of the stars in the film has appeared to confirm another rumour – that it was filmed on an iPhone.

28 Years Later is the third installment of the zombie franchise.

It follows 2002's 28 Days Later, which became a cult classic and is often considered to be Murphy's breakout role, and its sequel 28 Weeks Later in 2007.

The iPhone rumours began last year when a photograph was released from the set of the film of one of its stars Jodie Comer. In the background, eagle-eyed fans noticed what appeared to be a smartphone hooked up to a professional lens set-up.

Comer's co-star Jack O’Connell has now seemed to confirm the rumour, mentioning the iPhone set-up while speaking at the European premiere of his new movie Sinners. The actor was contrasting the IMAX cameras used in the Ryan Coogler-directed Sinners with the iPhone used on 28 Years Later.

Director Danny Boyle and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle have a penchant for using new technology in their productions, and opting to shoot the film using an iPhone 15 Pro Max is in keeping with their approach to this series in particular.

For the original 2002 film, they chose to use a Canon XL-1 camcorder, becoming one of the first Hollywood productions to do so.

The first iPhone was still five years away at this point in time.

This image from 28 Years Later had fans speculating about Murphy's involvement

Fans have been keen to see Murphy reprise his 28 Days Later role as Jim, a bicycle courier who wakes up in hospital to discover that the UK has fallen into a zombie epidemic.

One of the first looks fans were given of the new film was when an image of an emaciated zombie was released last year.

Many said it resembled Murphy and got excited at the prospect of his return, though this was later confirmed to be untrue.

Rumours about him starring in the film appear to be put to bed for now, though he is on board as an executive producer.

28 Years Later is set for release on 20 June.
