TUSCOLA (Chambana Today) – With Central Illinois weather posing unique challenges to homes and commercial buildings alike, choosing the right roofing material can be a tough decision for property owners. That’s why we sat down with Brett Adkisson, Vice President and Owner of Savior Roofing in Tuscola, to talk all things roofing—from asphalt shingles to spray foam systems—and get his expert insight into making smart, long-lasting choices.
Start With Your Needs, Budget, and Climate
“When choosing a roofing material,” says Adkisson, “homeowners and business owners should consider cost, appearance, and lifespan. But it’s also about understanding their specific priorities—whether that’s energy efficiency, durability, or just aesthetics.”
He emphasizes tailoring every recommendation to the client. “To guide someone to the right option, I first listen. Then I show them materials that fit both their needs and their budget.”
Central Illinois brings both hot summers and freezing winters, making climate an important consideration. “If a customer is concerned about energy bills, I tell them to think about color,” he explains. “Darker roofs absorb heat, so they’ll increase cooling costs in the summer—but they help in the winter. Lighter colors do the opposite.”
Asphalt Shingles: Reliable and Popular
Asphalt shingles remain one of the most common choices in residential roofing. “Homeowners choose asphalt shingles because they’re affordable, durable, and come in a wide range of colors and styles,” says Adkisson.
He notes that with proper attic ventilation, asphalt shingles can last up to 30 years—although the standard lifespan is closer to 20 years. “Heat buildup in the attic can degrade the shingles prematurely. Ventilation makes all the difference.”
Metal Roofing: Long-Term Durability
Metal roofs are gaining popularity, and for good reason. “The biggest benefit of metal roofing is lifespan,” says Adkisson. “They can easily last 40 years or more.”
He explains the two main types:
- Standing seam roofs, with concealed fasteners for a sleek look and weather resistance
- Rib roofs, with visible fasteners that are easier to install and maintain
What about noise? “People ask if metal roofs are loud, but unless it’s open-framed like a barn, homes with decking and insulation won’t notice a difference.”
As for extreme weather, metal roofs hold their own. “They resist hail better, withstand wind gusts up to 120 mph, and reduce the risk of ice dams compared to asphalt.”
Flat Roofs and Commercial Buildings
For flat commercial roofs, Adkisson explains the differences between EPDM, TPO, and PVC:
- EPDM (Rubber): Great for cold climates, durable and flexible
- TPO: Reflects heat, affordable, best in warmer climates
- PVC: Top choice for buildings exposed to oils or chemicals, such as restaurants
“PVC is more expensive, but in tough environments, it’s worth it.”
Spray Foam Roofing and Roof Coatings
Another modern solution? Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF). “It creates a seamless, waterproof layer with built-in insulation. It’s great for older buildings with low-slope metal roofs—it brings them back to life.”
SPF’s high R-value helps reduce energy bills by improving insulation. “It keeps the building cooler in summer and warmer in winter,” Adkisson says. Roof coatings can also extend roof life by protecting against UV damage and leaks. “They form a waterproof seal, ideal for maintaining older roofs without a full replacement.”
Helping Customers Make the Right Choice
For clients unsure where to start, Adkisson keeps it simple. “We start with your budget. Then we ask what matters most—appearance, lifespan, or energy efficiency. From there, we show you your options.”
He encourages homeowners to ask questions and come in with ideas. “At the end of the day, we want people to be happy with the roof they choose.”
