ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. (WPDE) — The family of 20-year-old Jaylon Trachon "Tra" Watson died last June in a crash in Robeson County, and his family is spreading awareness of the importance of seat belts.
Watson died in a single-car crash on Highway 130 near South Horne Camp Road in Robeson County, according to First Sgt. S.B. Lewis with N.C. State Highway Patrol.
Lewis said an on-scene investigation determined the driver reportedly struck an embankment and overturned.
He added that the driver was ejected from the vehicle, ultimately killing him.
Watson's mother, Victoria Moore, said she believes her son would have survived if he had been wearing his seatbelt.
Moore and her family are working with the North Carolina Governor's Highway Safety program to spread awareness to young people of the risks of not wearing seatbelts.
Watson's 8-year-old sister said what their family is trying to do could help save a life.
"I felt very sad because he meant a lot to me. And I didn't want him to pass away. Put your seat belts on. Because my brother didn't put his own. He got into a wreck and he passed away," said Jameyah Moore, Watson's sister.
Victoria Moore said her son's child was born after his death, and he never got to see the child.
She shared the following message last month on social media:
"To honor Tra's memory, we have launched the Adopt a Block program in Fairmont. Inspired by Adopt a Highway, this initiative focuses on beautifying our town. Tra's love for Fairmont was unwavering, and we seek to continue his legacy by maintaining the town's cleanliness. "
Moore said the first cleanup event will take place on June 14, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Fairmont community park.
She added, you can adopt a block in town to pay tribute to a loved one.
