YEREVAN. – As a result of electricity market liberalization, there will be a guaranteed supplier in the country, the Electric Networks of Armenia (ENA).

Hayk Harutyunyan, Deputy Minister of Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources, on Tuesday said the aforementioned at the National Assembly, as he introduced the respective bill.

In his words, alternative suppliers should strive to sell electricity under better conditions.

As per Harutyunyan, Armenia will have a market of direct contracts for large consumers, which will be able to purchase electricity by direct contracts, and use solely the distribution function of ENA.

Also, he expressed confidence that competitiveness will bring about efficiency improvement.

Hayk Harutyunyan added that last year’s increase in consumption in Armenia was primarily on the account of industry.

“We [Armenia] are confident that we have an electricity sales market in neighboring countries,” he noted, in particular. “At the same time we realize that it’s not unlimited; therefore we reserve certain powers to the [Armenian] government to foretell the markets.”
