Department of Energy Issues Final Rule to Ensure American Families Have Access to High-Performance, Labor-Saving Dishwashers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issued a Final Rule to ensure Americans have access to high-performance, time and labor saving dishwashers. These changes will allow Americans to choose products that complete a wash or dry cycle more quickly and efficiently and give consumers the choice to decide what dishwasher is most suitable for their personal needs.

“Today the Trump Administration reaffirmed its commitment to reducing regulatory burdens and reinstating consumer choice for American families,” said Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette. “With this final rulemaking, we are once again letting the American people—not Washington—decide what appliances to use in their homes.”

DOE’s final rule establishes a new product class for residential dishwashers. Currently, DOE divides covered residential dishwashers into two product classes: standard dishwashers and  compact dishwashers. This final rule will create a third product class of standard dishwashers that have cycle times of 60 minutes or less from washing through drying. This new product class allows manufacturers to develop new products that provide families with the option of purchasing labor-saving, short-cycle dishwashers.

The 60-minute cycle time in the final rule is based on testing DOE conducted during the rulemaking process, which indicated that on average, the new product class can complete the cycle faster while scoring a higher level of cleaning performance, compared to tested normal cycles.
